Reliable Predictability and the Carob Tree

At the end of Summer, Ian Ashford, Sales and Marketing Director at Flint, shares his thoughts on the importance of reliability in a world that demonstrates its unpredictability daily.

This year, at this time, most of our minds that have wandered off to where we would usually like to be at this time of the year. Somewhere in the sun away from a laptop, probably.

My thoughts have wandered to my parents’ place over in Cyprus and very specifically to a Carob tree that grows in the back yard and in particular, the seeds in the pods that grow on the tree.

I was told a very interesting story when I was last there, in an age before masks when planes used to fill the sky.

The story said that each and every seed on that tree weighs roughly the same. This level of reliable predictability led to these carob seeds, often known as carats, to be used as the measure for the size of diamonds and other precious gemstones.

If you plan to check this, then you’ll find that each carob seed weighs roughly 200 milligrams (0.20 grams), and that is exactly the weight of one-carat. If you have a one-carat diamond laying around and a spare carob tree in your garden, you may wish to give it a try…

The Need for Reliability in a World of Unpredictability

I really like the concept behind the reliable predictability of the carob tree seeds. To think that no matter which pod you open to test, no matter which Mediterranean country you’re in, the seeds within the pod will weigh the same is pretty incredible.

At Flint, we endeavour to embrace the same methodology.

Regardless of whether you’re looking for:
